Laurie Lipton was born in New York in 1953 and began drawing at age four. She was the first person to graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a Fine Arts degree in Drawing, with honors. After living for 36 years in Holland, Belgium, Germany, France, and London, she returned to the United States and is now based in Los Angeles. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout Europe and the U.S.
Inspired by the religious paintings of the Flemish School and the Old Masters, Lipton developed her own highly detailed drawing technique using thousands of fine cross-hatched lines to create luminous, painterly effects in pencil. Rejecting the abstract and conceptual trends she encountered in art school, she pursued a vision that blends the surreal and the real, often in striking black and white. Her work has been widely praised for its technical mastery, dark wit, psychological intensity, and sharp commentary on modern life.
